Drysdale's School of Taekwon-Do Protocol

The following are proper procedures to follow either in the "dojang", or when being visited by dignitaries.

  1. Upon entering the "dojang" prior to the start of class, bow first to the flags, then to the instructor and/or any other Black Belt in the training area. If the class has begun you will wait, at ready stance, to be acknowledged by the instructor and with his permission bow in and join the ongoing class. If arriving early to class a proper salutation is common courtesy towards senior students.

  1. When class is to officially begin, the instructor will call to order the students at which time all will line up according to rank with the most senior student to the instructors left as he faces the class. The most senior student will give commands to bow first to the flags, then to the instructor and finally, to all other Black Belts not participating in class may also be acknowledged out of respect for their rank. The same procedure applies to the end of class.

  1. Should the Master instructor enter the dojang prior to or during class, the most senior student is to stop all activity call the class to attention, have them turn and face the Master instructor, and bow. The Master instructor will return the bow and either have them continue their training or instruct the class what to do next. All bowing is with the heels together, toes apart, hands to the side closed, bend the body 15 degrees and long enough for the senior to come up first.

  1. If it should be necessary for a student to leave an ongoing class, he should raise his hand to be recognized by the instructor, bow make his request, wait for a response and bow again. This applies to asking questions in class as well.

  1. While seated on the floor, all students will do so with their legs crossed and bent in front of them, or on them with feet behind. Lying down, or sitting with legs outstretched is not proper etiquette. If while sitting, an instructor wishes to address you, you should stand and bow, and wait in ready stance to be dismissed and bow again.

  1. Students should exercise care in maintaining their practice suits (dobok) clean at all times. When straightening the uniform in class or in front of a Black Belt, it is proper to turn your back briefly from them or the flags.

  1. No undershirts, or Jewelry of any kind should be worn when wearing the dobok. No headbands or jewelry of any kind should be worn when wearing the dobok. The complete suit should be worn properly at all times whether in class or out.

  1. All students should be addressed by their last name unless they wish to be called by their first. Never address an instructor by their first name and without first bowing. It is proper to use "SIR" and "MAM" when addressing instructors.

  1. Never ask to learn the next higher pattern from anyone. The instructor will teach you what you are qualified to learn and it is disrespectful to ask for additional training unless he has asked you to remind him.

  1. When making arrangements for visiting dignitaries i.e.: Founder, President. Vice-President, Regional/State, Directors, Instructors etc.... It is imperative that utmost care be taken in assuring that all details of the visit are accounted for to meet the demands of the visitor. All reservations for transportation, accommodations, meals and incidentals, should be taken care of by the host. When having a head table where the dignitaries will sit, it is proper to have paper, pen and something to drink, at their disposal and depending on the function, some kind of thank you gift. NO DETAIL IS TOO SMALL.
